Eco-Car Wash Fundraiser – Huge success!

Our fish friendly and water conservative car wash with LiquidTech Auto-Detaling and Spa was a huge success on Saturday, May 5th 2012. Community members dropped by for a one of kind car wash experience – 100 percent plant based biodegrable soap and 50 gallons less water used, with the same shine and splendor at the end! 10% of all proceeds were donated to Greening Nipissing. BIG THANKS to LiquidTech for the stellar work and energy!

Greening Screening – Free Film Night – “SpOIL”

Join Greening Nipissing Thursday, May 17th 6:30pm at the North Bay Public Library for a free film screening of the movie SpOIL. The International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP) has teamed up with Pacific WILD, the Gitga’at First Nation of British Columbia, LightHawk, TidesCanada, Save our Seas Foundation, Sierra Club BC, and the Dogwood initiative to carry out a Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition (RAVE) in the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia. We are focusing our energy and cameras on this pristine region in response to plans by Enbridge Inc. to build a pipeline for heavy crude oil from the Alberta tar sands across British Columbia to the coast of the Great Bear Rainforest.

The tar sands in northern Alberta are arguably one of the world’s most environmentally-devastating extractive industries and the proposed pipeline would put one of our planet’s most ecologically-sensitive and intact marine ecosystems at risk for a catastrophic oil spill through increased mega tanker traffic.

The 14-day expedition to the Great Bear Rainforest called upon 7 world-renowned photographers and 3 videographers to thoroughly document the region’s landscapes, wildlife, and culture. The RAVE provided media support to the First Nations and environmental groups seeking to stop the proposed Enbridge Gateway pipeline project (and thus expansion of the tar sands) and to expose the plan to lift the oil tanker ship moratorium.

Greening Nipissing Car Wash FUNDRAISER this Saturday – Wash your car or come volunteer!

Come on out to 693 Fisher St this Saturday between 9:00am and 5:00pm for an eco-car wash fundraiser LiquidTech and Greening Nipissing are hosting. Liquidtech's plant based biodegradable soap will give your car a sheen clean, while also using 20 gallons less water. 10 % of all proceeds will be donated to Greening Nipissing. We're also looking for volunteers who are interested in holding signs to get people to come in for a wash on the day of. E-mail u s or call us at 705 472 0200 ext 2 if you're interested.

Evaluate Greening Nipissing – what should we do next?

Greening Nipissing is coming on to its 10 year anniversary this Fall. As such, we want you to help us evaluate the projects we offer and what projects we should offer. Your feedback is critical to us. As an environmental education charity, we want to provide projects that suit your needs and interests. The survey below only takes 5 minutes. Your participation will greatly assist us in assessing projects we should pursue to meet the North Bay community environmental needs better.

Each rain barrel comes fully equipped with a leaf and mosquito filter basket, an overflow adaptor that permits multiple barrels to be connected in series, 1.2 metres of overflow hose and a spigot that attaches directly to a garden hose. $55/barrel. Rain Garden Planting – Thurs June 7th

Thursday, June 7th 4:00pm @ the North Bay Public Library courtyard (Worthington St side) – Come on out, learn about rain gardens and get yours hands dirty planting this years rain garden! The North Bay Public Library is opening up their courtyard to the public for the first time in 35 years now that the electrical box is out.Its going to become an outdoor reading area. Greening Nipissing is sponsoring a rain garden in the center of the courtyard to catch the library roof's stormwater runoff and clean out its pollutants before it ends back up in Lake Nipissing.

If you know you want to get your green thumb on and attend this event, register online. It helps us know how many people we'll need to accommodate on the day of!

Rain Barrel Sale

Orders are now being taken for rain barrels, a partnership between the North Bay Heritage Gardeners, Greening Nipissing and RainBarrel.ca.

The North Bay Heritage Gardeners and Greening Nipissing are partnering in the education of the local public in the benefits of the use of rain barrels for the collection of water for gardens and in the mitigation of storm water runoff. Rain barrels help reduce water pollution by reducing storm water runoff, which can contain pollutants like sediment, oil, grease, bacteria and nutrients. Each rain barrel comes fully equipped with a leaf and mosquito filter basket, an overflow adaptor that permits multiple barrels to be connected in series, 1.2 metres of overflow hose and a spigot that attaches directly to a garden hose.

The price is $55 per barrel. Additional overflow hose can also be purchased if required.

Greening Screening – “Mysteries of the Great Lakes” April 19th 6:30pm

Join us for a viewing of Science North’s IMAX production “Mysteries of the Great Lakes”. This greening screening will take place from 6:30-8:30pm on Thursday, April 19th downtown at Greening Nipissing’s (our) office located at 183 First St W, North Bay.

Mysteries of the Great Lakes is a cinematic masterpiece taking the viewer on a journey of the history, culture, and incredible geography that lies within the Great Lakes. Attendance is free and all are welcome!

These greening screenings are part of our water education program and are made possible by TD Friends of the Environment.

Community Gardening Committee

During the discussin at our last Greening Screening there was a lot of fervor and excitement from community members about getting a Community Gardening Committee started. The intention behind the committee would be to pursue the development of securing community gardens in the North Bay and area. If you are interested in sitting on this committee, please send Chaylene Grieve-Saunders an e-mail at chaylene@greeningnipissing.org. We shall be organizing a committee meeting sometime over the next few months.

Greening Screening – "Mysteries of the Great Lakes"

Thursday, April 19th 6:30pm FREE at Greening Nipissing's Office 183 First St W, NB:This is a movie you won't want to miss! Produced by Science North, this film takes you on a scenicly spectactularly journey! It takes a drop of water nearly 400 years to travel from the headwaters of Lake Superior to the edge of Lake Ontario. Along the way, the water passes by towering cliffs dotted with early Native American pictographs, caribou and moose grazing on the shores, over giant prehistoric sturgeon lurking among thousands of shipwrecks and past nearly 40 million people who live along the more than 10,000 miles of coastline.

Pet Waste Digester Workshop

Saturday, April 28th 10:00am – 12:00pm @ the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority, 15 Janey Ave – North Bay: Join Greening Nipissing and the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority for an educational and hands session on how you can be a more environmentally friendly dogwalker. The first half of the workshop covers topics on how unattended dog waste can contaminate the environment, the second half of the workshop is where you’ll get to make your very own pet waste digester to take home.

Cost: $25.00/person (or free if you just want to participate in the first half)
When: Saturday, April 28th @ 10:00am
Where: 15 Janey Ave – NBMCA Natural Classroom

What a great turnout!: Repeatable sections are noted with plus and minus signs so that you can add and subtract content blocks. You can also get a little fancy: repeat blocks and remove all text to make image "gallery" sections, or do the opposite and remove images for text-only blocks!

World Water Day Hike

A big thank you to the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority for taking us and community members on an enriching, informational hike along Chippewa Creek for our March 24th 2012 World Water Day Festivities! Greening Nipissing also provided information on stormsewer drain systems and how urban runoff effects the health of Chippewa creek – see the pictures and be inspired!
