Rain Garden Workshop Thursday, June 20th One Day Only!

This year is our third, and likely final year, of putting in a public demonstration rain garden. If you’ve had the itch to come learn about these bad boy stormwater management tools, now is your chance!

Join us for this two hour, hands-on workshop on what rain gardens are and help us put our 3rd rain garden in. This year’s garden is being put along the Chippewa Creek Eco-Path beside Amelia Park.

COST: $25.00/person
WHEN: Thursday, June 20th
TIME: 6:00pm – 8:00pm
WHERE: Along the Chippewa Creek Eco-Path beside Amelia Park (across the street from Lee Park – between Bunyan St, Queen St and Memorial Ave).

World Water Day 2013 thanks

Thanks to Chris Mayne, City Councillor, Vic Fedeli, Nipissing MPP, Barbara Laplante, Ontario Trillium Foundation volunteer, for coming out to World Water Day! The talks were terrific, opening with Dr. Dan Walters from Nipissing University putting together the importance of cooperation among communities and countries when it comes to water stresses such as climate change and population growth. Brennain Lloyd from Northwatch gave us the history and importance of wetlands and explaining how identifying llocally important wetlands would be helpful in ensuring our healthy waterways.

Greening Nipissing welcomes new NOHFC intern

Greening Nipissing is pleased to announce that Ian Wassink has been selected as our new Finances & Fundraising Director Intern.

During his time at Greening Nipissing, Wassink will organize and strengthen Greening Nipissing’s funding and revenue sources, develop and maintain community partnerships, and execute projects and fundraising events.

“Greening Nipissing is an excellent community-based charity that delivers exciting environmental education projects and workshops in the North Bay area,” said Wassink. “I look forward to Greening Nipissing’s upcoming events such as World Water Day 2013 on Saturday, March 23rd and our Rain Barrel Sale on May 11th.”

Wassink relocated to North Bay in 2005 from Walkerton, Ontario and was educated at Nipissing University where he recently completed a Master of Arts graduate degree. He is pleased to call North Bay his home.

This internship is made possible through the support of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. Wassink previously helped raise money for various charities in Ontario and Canada such as Camp Shalom in Cambridge, ON, Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Cystic Fibrosis Canada, and various food banks.

World Water Day Festival & Walk

It’s that time of year again to celebrate water and everything it gives us: snow, rain, hail, lakes for swimming in, rivers for canoeing on, pools for playing in, and an essential resource we can’t live without. On Saturday, March 23rd Greening Nipissing, in partnership with the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority and local business, LiquidTech, is proud to announce the 2nd Annual World Water Day Festival taking place from 12:00pm – 4:00pm at St. Andrews United Church, 399 Cassells St. North Bay, ON.

As a kick off to the festival, from 10:30am-11:30am, there will be a guided water walk along the new Chippewa Creek EcoPath. Walk participants should meet at Memorial Gardens’ south parking lot at 10 am.

The festival includes free water film screenings, workshops and vendors for all ages. At 1:00pm there will be a “Water Sports Clinic” workshop by Lefebvres Source for Adventure. Films being shown include “Sea Turtle”, “The Water Brothers: The Big Thaw”, and “Polar Explorer”. At 2:00pm there will be a speaker series, starting off with a proclamation by Mayor Al Macdonald, followed by water talks from Dan Walters, Associate Professor of Geology at Nipissing University, and Brennain Lloyd, director of NorthWatch.

Come join us for this free, family fun event to celebrate and get to know more about our fundamental resource, water.

North Bay Community Garden Coalition, for which Greening Nipissing is a member organization of, is excited to launch their new website and Facebook page.  The purpose of the coalition is to promote and  increase the establishment of community gardens in North Bay through partnerships, networking and education. Check them out today. to learn more and about ways you can get involved in your local community gardening community.

We are having our annual Rain Barrel Sale & Fundraiser on Saturday, May 11th from 11:00am – 2:00pm at 1350 Fisher St. Rain Barrels are $65 each and must be purchased beforehand as there will be a minimal supply of barrels on the day of to buy. For every barrel bought, Greening Nipissing receives $20. Buy a rain barrel today today and support your local environemntal charity. Feel free to get some more information at our Facebook event.

We’re excited to be attending the Seed Exchange & Eco-Fair again this year on Saturday, February 23rd from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at St. Andrews United Church. The purpose of this event is to promote local food resiliency with the exchange of locally grown seeds and to promote awareness of local and global environmental issues as well as to provide the public with opportunities to get actively involved by volunteering with environmental groups. 10 Year Anniversary Dinner

On Nov 28th 2012, with over 100 people we celebrated 10 years of success! We’d like to extend a huge thank you to all those who attended and to all of our silent auction donees. It was a joy to to get to spend more personal time with our membership and receive ideas from our community on what they’d like Greening Nipissing to do in the coming future.

Water Treatment Plant Tour

Thurs, Oct 25th 9:30-11:30am: FREE – 248 Lakeside Drive – Ever wondered where your delicious drinking water comes from? Well now you’ve got the chance to find out! Join us for a tour of North Bay’s Water Treatment Plant on the shores of Trout Lake. We’ll do a short presentation on how stormwater runoff affects our drinking water and then go on a detailed tour of the plant. Space is limited and you must reserve your spot ahead of time on our website.

Eco-Film Festival

Fri, Nov 15th & Sat, Nov 17th @ Nipissing University Theater - 100 College Drive – Fri 6:30pm = mixer galla, 7:00pm – film TBA – Sat Nov 17th = ALL MOVIES FREE- 12:00pm = Blue Gold – World Water Wars, 3:00pm = Addicted to Plastic, 7:00pm – Gasland. Refreshments, information tables and possibly a talk available. Tickets for Friday night cost: $5/students, $10 adults and funds go to the Bike Fix Station Project to purchase another stand to donate to the city of North Bay for public use. Bike Fix Station Opening was a big success!

Last THursday, Sept 27 we held the official opening of the Bike Fix Station. See some great photos here. We had reps from all of our projects, North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority, Nipissing Environment Watch, and the City of North Bay say a few words and then we had a free demonstration on how to use the stand from Kevin at Cycleworks. We want to see you using the stand – next time you use it, take a pic and send it our way.
